Starting his career at the age of 24 as Secretary of the National Planning Commission, Thapa went on to hold key positions including Finance Secretary, Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, and Ambassador to the United States and India. He later served as the Nepal-side Coordinator of the Nepal-India Eminent Persons Group (EPG).
