Phirphire is the second novel by renowned Nepali author Buddhisagar, following the success of his debut novel Karnali Blues. This emotionally rich story explores themes of memory, friendship, and the passage of time.
The narrative follows Basanta, who returns to his childhood village after 16 years upon learning that his old home is about to be demolished. This visit rekindles memories of his youth, especially of his close friend Pawan. Their deep bond, challenged by village superstitions and politics, lies at the heart of the story.
Buddhisagar paints a vivid picture of village life, bringing to life a diverse cast of characters including the affectionate Juthiaama, the fearless snake-slayer Chilgadi, the rough Rocky Dada, and the enigmatic village shaman Kohinoor. These characters enrich the story, portraying the multifaceted nature of rural Nepal.
Written in Buddhisagar’s signature lyrical style, Phirphire beautifully captures the power of memory and the emotional pull of returning to one’s roots. The novel received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the prestigious Madan Puraskar in 2016.
